Story Boat by Kyo Maclear and illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh (Tundra Books; ages 3-7; $21.99) is a picture book that gently explores the refugee experience from the point of view of two young children. Strength and hope prevail.
I Will See You Again by Lisa Bovin (HighWater Press; ages 12+; $25), a member of the Deninu Kue First Nation, looks at a first-hand account of bereavement with an airplane journey to retrieve the author’s brother’s ashes. This picture book for older readers features traditional Dene artwork—splendidly colourful.
A Song for China: How My Father Wrote Yellow River Cantata by Ange Zhang (Groundwood Books; ages 10+; $19.95) describes the life of the author’s father, a militant poet whose Yellow River Cantata—a musical score—premiered in 1939.
